Board Meeting Minutes for July 17, 2011

David Rice’s office, Eau Claire

Present: Myron Buchholz, Shu Cheng, Ann Heywood, Mildred Larson, Nicholas Passell, David Rice, Eleanor Wolf (presiding)

Absent: Zoe Bowman, Stephanie Turner (notified).

1. Minutes

Minutes of the May 8, 2011 meeting were approved as circulated.

2. Treasurer’s report

David Rice reported a current balance of $817.87 in the checking account.

3. Annual dinner meeting

Nick Passell will work with Houligans for our annual dinner in October, to be followed by a meeting and speaker. Planning committee for program: Mildred Larson (convener), Ann Heywood, Nick Passell, and David Rice. Suggestions for speakers: Senator Feingold, Louis Butler, ideas from ACLU website.

4. ACLU Biennial Leadership Conference in Orlando, FL

Ann Heywood reported on several sessions at the ACLU Biennial. She will write up her report and email it to the board. Mildred Larson reported on a session on “Deploying Grasstops”. Grasstops are community leaders who can be enlisted as ACLU partners and allies.

5. Nominating Committee

Eleanor Wolf will need to resign by the next board election in order to focus on political activities.

6. Banned Books Week September 24 to October 1

The board decided to focus on the middle and high schools this year and encourage and participate in events for Banned Books Week. Board members will contact specific schools:

Myron– Memorial H.S.

Eleanor– Regis H.S. and DeLong Middle School

Shu– North H.S.

Mildred– South Middle School

There is a wealth of information on the American Library Association’s website for Banned Books Week.

7. Chippewa Valley Pride

The board decided to have a table at Chippewa Valley Pride, August 6. Shu, Myron and Stephanie (if she is back) will set up the table and banner. She will ask Stacy Harbaugh for materials.

8. Announcements

No NWEA convention this year. Current Mother Jones has a disturbing article about the Hormel plant and treatment of immigrants.

9. Next meeting: Sunday, 9/11, David’s office
