CVCLU Board Meeting of May 6, 2018
Unitarian Universalist Church, 421 South Farwell St., Eau Claire, Seekers Room
Board members present: Mohammed Alasagherin, Selika Ducksworth-Lawton, Ann Heywood, Mildred Larson, Teresa O’Halloran, David Shih, Paul Wagner, John Wiltrout
Board members absent: Kailee Berg, Lindsey Brandrup
The meeting was called to order at 5:35 p.m.
1. The board discussed the minutes of its 4/8/18 meeting. The board confirmed that we will not report state board activities in our minutes. The minutes will be corrected and redistributed.
2. John gave the treasurers report. In April there was a $100 donation from Paul Wagner, from his speaker’s honorarium earned at the UW Stout Civil Liberties Symposium. Balance in savings is 5.01, balance in checking is 851.39.
3. The board discussed the State Board report, and the stop & frisk victory.
4. The board discussed the letter to the state ACLU staff regarding the election mailing regarding the judicial race. Ann will revise and send to Chris Ott and Molly Collins.
5. The board discussed old business.
· Student Alliance update – Selika has planned a meeting for May 10 for interested students and will be publicizing with a flyer, emails, and whiteboard notices.
· Student representatives
o The board discussed Kailee Berg’s membership on the board, her inability to attend meetings and her high school graduation. David moved that Kailee be taken off the board, Mohammed seconded, and the motion was approved.
o Nazish informed the board she will only be able to serve until she moves away in August.
o Abby Green was appointed to the board.
o The board tabled further discussion of student members.
· April 30 leafleting
· Juneteenth Plans
· Pride event June 9 – the board will staff a table and Paul, Mildred, Teresa and David volunteered to assist.
6. The board discussed new business.
· Call for ACLU help – Ann told the board about a phone call she took from a man who thinks the Eau Claire court and state children and family services is designed to impoverish families. The board took no action.
· Race to Justice training report – Ann reported that the EX-incarcerated People Organizing (EXPO) presentation related to the prison and ex-prison population was very powerful. The board may consider an event in with Jonah and EXPO. Ann will talk with Sarah Ferber.
· The board discussed a Beer and Bill of Rights summer event briefly, with the idea being raised that it could be combined with the possible Jonah/Expo event. Tabled until June meeting.
· The meeting adjourned at 7 pm.
